Senegal offers land to Haitians

Senegal's president says he will offer free land and "repatriation" to people affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

President Abdoulaye Wade said Haitians were sons and daughters of Africa since Haiti was founded by slaves, including some thought to be from Senegal.

"The president is offering voluntary repatriation to any Haitian that wants to return to their origin," said Mr Wade's spokesman, Mamadou Bemba Ndiaye.

Tuesday's earthquake killed tens of thousands and left many more homeless.

Buildings have been reduced to rubble, the distribution of aid is slow, and people have been flooding out of the devastated capital, Port-au-Prince.

"Senegal is ready to offer them parcels of land - even an entire region. It all depends on how many Haitians come," Mr Bemba Ndiaye said.

"If it's just a few individuals, then we will likely offer them housing or small pieces of land. If they come en masse we are ready to give them a region."

The spokesman emphasised that if a region was given, it would be in a fertile part of the country rather than in its parched deserts, the Associated Press news agency reported.

I don't know if I am the first, but from what I can see this extraordinary gesture of solidarity has been largely ignored, except as a curiosity item. I want to publicly acknowledge my gratitude to President Abdoulaye Wade of Senegal for offering permanent shelter to displaced Haitians, victims of the country's worst natural disaster in recorded History. Whether a single Haitian takes advantage of it or not, the offer is on the table and it has been made by an African Head of State, from a country where many of our ancestors hail. While we may choose to pay more attention to offers of billions of dollars of humanitarian assistance that never truly materialize in lasting benefits to the Haitian people, we should at least know this: here's a man who welcomed us with open arms in our hour of need, while no similar offer has been made by anyone else in the world. My highest expression of respect and thanksgiving to President Abdoulaye Wade and the nation of Senegal that he represents.

I too am completely blown away by this beautiful act of human solidarity. How absolutely loving. I do hope we can have some official "Thank You" from our people to Senegal.

Thank you Senegal.

May our solidarity only grow from here on.
