A Canadian missionary abducted in Haiti is being held for ransom, his friend told CBC News on Wednesday.

Haiti Ed Hughes, 62, was kidnapped Monday in Cabaret, a town north of Port-au-Prince, where he runs an orphanage.

Nelson Ryman, who co-founded the orphanage with Hughes over six years ago, told CBC News that the alleged kidnappers had called the orphanage to demand money, the equivalent of about $30,000 Cdn.

"The demands for money are certainly not reasonable in terms of the amount of ransom, based on the fact this an orphanage, this a charity," Ryman said.

Hughes had to have his right arm amputated from the elbow in December after being shot by abductors who took an orphanage employee, Daniel Thelusmar. Thelusmar was returned safely three days later after a ransom was paid.

Ryman said that Thelusmar, a native Haitian, was negotiating on behalf of the orphanage with the alleged abductors.

A spokesperson for the United Nations said the organization was working with Haitian police to find Hughes and "liberate him as soon as possible."

Just over a year ago, Montrealer Huguette Goulet, 65, was kidnapped in Port-au-Prince. She was held for several days, but released unharmed after her family paid an unknown amount in ransom.

About a dozen Canadians have been held hostage in Haiti since 1999, but all have been released unharmed.

What happened to the technology that helped to publish Yvon Neptune's cell phone records?
